Sippy Cup Woes

Dear friends, please help.

I have been trying to get parker to use a sippy cup for almost 5 months and have had NO success!! I have gone out and bought at least 5 different kinds and none of them seem to impress my little man.

I really do not want to have a child using a bottle forever! In fact, I wanted to have him weaned off the bottle by 1 which is now only one month away.

Do you have any tips or suggestions for me? I dont know what else to try.

Thank you!

Have you tried the munchkin (I think that's how you spell it...)kind? The part you suck out of it clear and KIND OF looks like/shaped like a nipple of a bottle. It was nice because it was easy to get Noah to use that when i first started sippy cups and now he can use any kind. Good Luck! I hope you're feeling great!

Not that I have experience, but I say forget the sippy cup and let him drink out of a real adult cup.. only when he is sitting down of course. Maybe he will skip the sippy cup stage, which is really no big deal.
See if that works.

We tried with our little one for about that long before she finally figured it out. She would only drink from it if we held it for her. At my mom's house for Christmas we tried a tupperware cup with a snap on lid (no stopper) and she figured out how to hold a cup and that she had to tip it. Now after a month, she is like a pro with any kind of sippy. Don't give up!

I didn't have a problem with my little guy, but my parents had a big problem with me. So much, in fact, that I remember it. One night when I went to bed, they packed up all the bottles and when I woke up the next morning, they told me the dishwasher ate them all. Cold turkey. Turns out they actually gave them to my aunt, but once they were out of the house, my parents weren't tempted to give them to me anymore. Then again, I was a lot older than Parker, so I would hold off before going to any extremes just yet. Good luck!!!!

Samantha didn't have a problem with sippy cups until she turned 1 and went from formula in a bottle to whole milk in a sippy. She HATED sippy cups and wouldn't go near them after I put her milk in them (I tried formula in there too and she flipped). You may not want to do what I did, but it really worked. I went Cold Turkey on her. The only thing I offered was a sippy. The first day she didn't drink a single thing until about 4 in the afternoon (we gave her plenty of things high fiber so she didn't get plugged), day 2 she did better, day 3 she was used to it and day 4 she was perfectly content. It was hard to be a tough love mom, but it worked for me!

Munchkin brand cups worked for us too...but Kamryn never had too much trouble... sorry! The only problem with Munchkin brand was after she had teeth though and was biting on the end and making bigger holes so that suddenly it wasn't spill proof anymore :(

Good luck! He'll transition--so just keep trying! :)

We wanted Kenna off the bottle by a year as well, and at 11 months she could only use a sippy cup with LOTS of help. We tried several kinds as well. Right about a year she learned how to use it after we had been offering it to her for several months. She never had a bottle after a year...
Moral: he's still got time! I would say don't put anything besides milk in a bottle, you can encourage him to use the sippy by that being the only way he gets the good stuff, like watered down juice.
I'd say definetely do the Munchkin nipple looking sippy cup. Here's a different idea: How about trying a straw sippy cup? Camilla can do both, but for the longest time, she'd prefer the straw. Just a thought. The sippy cup she uses is a Playtex one, and the straw is made of rubber so it's soft. Hope this helps :)
Oh, and start small. I started offering the sippy cup when Camilla was 6 months or so, and she wanted nothing to do with them. We made it to the point in which she'd drink water out of it just fine, just not milk. When I decided we were done with the bottle ), she decided NOT to drink milk from her sippy... and that's where we are. She doesn't like milk now.. and you've seen her: she's still so strong. So, it all works out :)

1) Thad didn't fully make that transition until after 1. He probably would have if we pushed it but I was cool with him taking his time. He will get it, don't stress too much.

2) We used a kind of transition cup with a silicon no-spill spout... I can't remember the brand name. It's the same feeling as a bottle so it makes the transition easier, but the spout is shaped like real sippy cups. I know they're at Target, I'm really sorry I can't remember the name... unless you've already tried it, in which case... see comment 1. Good luck!

Bec - don't stress! Honestly, it's so not worth getting worked up over. There will be so many other battles for you to win - if he still needs time, then he still needs time! It IS good to get them off the bottle, but it's not life or death, and you won't do irreplaceable harm to him by letting him hold onto it for *gasp* one extra month. L is refusing to eat any new food at all and has pretty much limited his diet to milk and crackers and plain noodles. But hey, at least it's something, and I keep trying every day - and that's all I can do! So don't kill yourself over this - it will all work out! I promise.

He's also sick, so that has wiped out his appetite - I didn't give that example to show that I let L call all the shots around here, because that's not the case! I'm just saying that they do need to do things on their own time table sometimes, and you help, guide, and lead them - but you can't force them. Hope that helps somewhat!

I know that some doctors suggest just taking the bottle away ... and that has worked for a friend of mine. I am in the process right now with Angela and for me I'm trying to get her to like the cup so I've put something she really lieks in it ... watered down apple juice. But other than that I really don't know yet, sorry! I wish you luck and encourage you to pray for help ;)

Ok, here's what we did:

Macey would drink watered down juice in a sippy, but wouldn't even touch it w/ milk in it.

So, we just gave her milk in a bottle in the morning and at night until she was like 14 months. I eventually got her to drink milk out of sippy by adding some chocolate syrup to it and then putting less in each day until I didn't have to put any in.

Good luck! And as my doctor kept telling me, "they're not going to take a bottle to kindergarten with them, so don't stress too much about it." :)

He's still young. At first I wanted my boys off the bottle by 1 but they just weren't ready and after thinking about it, I couldn't really think of a great reason to take it away. I took the bottle away slowly so they could get used to their sippy cups. Once they hit 14 months, I just stopped giving them their bottles and they were ready. When I first started using sippy cups I bought the ones with soft spouts, now that they are older they can drink out of any kind. I prefer the Snap 'n' Click ones. Good luck and don't stress. It's really not a huge deal if he isn't quite ready when he turns 1.

The Light of the World

I was asked to give a talk yesterday in church.  Kinda daunting knowing it was Christmas Sunday, but I think it went pretty well.  I like remembering my talk so I'm throwing it up here mainly for my own record.  But maybe it will bless the lives of others too.  I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and that the Light of Christ will be upon you and radiate from you now and forever. Jesus Christ: The Light of the World Rebecca’s talk given on 12/20/2015 Jesus Christ.  Can a topic be any broader? I have spent a lot of time over the last 6 weeks trying to decide what direction I wanted to go and I kept going back to the same thought, Jesus is the light of the world.  This is not an insignificant statement, but very profound and very important.  Let’s start from the beginning. Many Prophets have testified of the fact that Jesus Christ is the light of the world long before the Savior was even born.  The very first sign of his bir...

Because God Love's Us

How is Christ’s Birth Significant to me Talk on 12/20/2020 Good Morning Brothers and Sisters & Merry Christmas!   Heavenly Father must know my preferred method for giving a talk is procrastinating because I have been called to fill in last minute on many occasions.   However, this is the first time it’s happened on Christmas Sunday.   But I am happy to be here with you and I’m so grateful for technology that allows us to meet and worship together, especially during this Christmas season.   I’m not gonna lie, this is weird speaking on zoom.   I much prefer being together and making eye contact with you and seeing your encouraging smiles.   So please bear with any awkwardness I may have.   When initially asked to speak, Brother Smith gave me the topic of “How Christ’s birth is significant to me.”   My initial response was, could that topic be any broader?   But then gratefully he followed it up with “Particularly from the prosp...

Kid's Talks

Riley’s Primary Talk on Baptism 3/15/20 Today I want to talk on Baptism.   Being baptized is a commandment from Heavenly Father.   We have to be baptized to make it back to Him.   Even Jesus Christ was baptized.   If Jesus Christ was baptized we should be baptized too.   When we turn 8 years old we can choose to follow Jesus Christ’s example and be baptized too.   When we are baptized and confirmed we become members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.     If you have already been baptized, you should remember the covenants, or promises you made.   If you have not been baptized, you should study and pray and keep the commandments so that when you turn 8 years old you will be ready. We should all remember how important baptism is.   I am really excited I get to be baptized next year.   In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen Faith Parker’s Talk   2/16/20   Today, my talk is going to be about f...
