I Read A BOOK!

In Fact, I have read 3 books within the past week!

For those of you who really know me, I hope the title of this post did not put you into Cardiac Arrest. I have NEVER been a reader. I don't know why, but I just don't love it like the majority of my family and friends do. I am much more a DOer. I like to go out and DO things then just sit around and read. But the past few years I have had more of a desire to read. There are so many books out there that I really want to read, I just don't want to sit down and read them. I have been collecting book after book the past few Christmases and just barely cracking them. So now things have finally settled down a little and before they get crazy again, I'm taking some time to read for myself.

I got this book a little over a year ago I think. Either toward the end of my pregnancy or right after P was born. I flipped through it in the bookstore and got really excited about it, So I Got it!

And I'm SOOOO Glad I DID!!

This is really an AWESOME book! It is a real book written by real mothers and talks about their real and crazy day-to-day life and how to make the most of it. It really embodies exactly the kind of mother I want to be. I appreciate that they talk about practical things and about how life is hard and kids are crazy. But they also talk about how to make the most out of every situation and how to enjoy the chaos.

Another thing I really like about the book is that each little chapter, if you can even call it that, is only 2 pages long! It is so easy to just pick up when you have five minutes, read one topic and then get back to your busy life. I HATE books with long chapters. I don't know why it matters, but before I even read it I always look to see how long it is and if it is long, I probably will put the book back. So this book was perfect for me!

Honestly, if you are a mother or ever have the desire to be a mother, you should read this book! If you live close by I'm MORE than happy to lend it to you. It is so awesome! I have marked it up so much. Lots and lots of good stuff in there. Hope you take my word for it!

This is one of the other books I just read:

I also loved this one! It was written by a famous news reporter/talk show host. She starts off by talking about how we all have a plan and we tell it too the Lord what we want to have happen in our lives and when. We quickly discover that the Lord has a very different plan for us. She came here to BYU, and had it all mapped out. What she would study, when she would graduate, when she would meet and marry the man of her dreams, and when she would start a family. Lets just say, she wasn't even close in her plan in regards to what Heavenly Father had planned for her. She ended up graduating without any marriage options and started to work full time. something she had never planned on doing. She goes on to become very good at what she does and is offered quite a prestigious job. She did become quite famous and eventually way down the road she met and married someone. Again not what she had imagined, he had been previously married, and had kids from that marriage as well. She never imagined being the mother of children that were not "hers." Anyway, as you can see I'm not good at writing a simple background of even the author. But this book is really for any and every woman in all phases of life. Married or not, mother or not. It really is about how the Lord can and will lead our lives in the best path for us if we have faith in Him.

It obviously also talks about being a mother and is kind of directed more towards mother's who have a hard time doing the everyday mundane takes motherhood requires, and lets face it, we all struggle with that every once in a while. But it talks about how motherhood really is the most important job their is and how even if we are not currently mothers of our own children, how we as women mother those around us and that kind of stuff. It is hard for me to sum up in one little paragraph, but I loved it! I practically highlighted the whole book and highly recommend it.

And the third book I read is
"A Heart Like His:
Making Space for God's Love in Your Life"
by Virginia A. Pearce

I'm not gonna lie, I am not too fond of this book. It was not at all what I was expecting or hoping for. I'm all about learning how to be better and I really do think that there is ALWAYS room for improvement in every aspect of life. The title really caught my attention because isn't our ultimate goal to become more like our Savior? And there were a few good points in the book, I just didn't really like how it was written I guess. (Not that I have a lot to compare it to since this in one of a handful of books I have ever read) It is not bad, I just didn't like as much as the other 2 books.

Anyway, I am on a roll and I plan to keep going!! I am so proud of myself because truly and honestly I NEVER read!! These are 5 of maybe, MAYBE 5 books I have ever read by choice and one of the others is the scriptures. I have quite a few books on my shelf that I will read next, they are all mostly religious books.

So you readers out there, do you have any suggestions or recommendations for me? Since I never read, I don't really know what kind of books I like. I'm assuming action, adventure, with a little romance mixed in there. Some of my friends have been talking a lot about "The Hunger Games" I think that is what they were called, so maybe I'll try those out.

What do you think?

I too am like you... not a reader! I did read The Hunger Games though... Suzanne is always trying to get me to read. It was really good! It is captivating, can be kinda graphic at parts, but it is an easy read and sucks you in. I think I would like to start reading educational books too. That's where I want to go, but sometimes they can get really boring. Keep suggesting books that you read, I may just pick one of them up some day! :) You're great!

Rebecca, I suggest you join goodreads.com and add me as a friend. You will probably discover you have other friends already on the site. You can review books, see what your friends are reading, recommend books to other people, etc. The Hunger Games is really good and it's not the typical genre of books I like, but it was amazing. I'm glad you are becoming a reader. :)

I was never a big reader, either. But I fell in love with the Childern of the Promise series. I think you would like it.

Yes you need to read The Hunger Games! I'm on book two and am so excited because the third book comes out in the fall. It is an interesting read with some romance :) As for ideas of books...I just like to read about my intrests like murder mysteries or medical books...so I Google "medical books" or "murder mysteries" to see what there is and then head to Barnes and Noble to start reading it to see if I like it. Just a suggestion...

Hunger games is great! You should go for it!

And I LOVE Jane Clayson Johnson's book "I am a Mother". I have read it twice now and just love the doctrine and wonderful stories she tells. It is inspiring. I think I also like it a lot because I actually heard Sister Johnson speak at a Women's conference a few years ago and she is an amazing woman! She has a different perspective of life that I think should radiate to women everywhere--whether they are a mother or not! :) Love it!
You know, back in college you couldn't get me to read anything (other than a textbook, and I HAD to do that). Now I love reading... for fun! Glad to hear you liked those books; I should look into them. Thanks for the reviews!

The Light of the World

I was asked to give a talk yesterday in church.  Kinda daunting knowing it was Christmas Sunday, but I think it went pretty well.  I like remembering my talk so I'm throwing it up here mainly for my own record.  But maybe it will bless the lives of others too.  I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and that the Light of Christ will be upon you and radiate from you now and forever. Jesus Christ: The Light of the World Rebecca’s talk given on 12/20/2015 Jesus Christ.  Can a topic be any broader? I have spent a lot of time over the last 6 weeks trying to decide what direction I wanted to go and I kept going back to the same thought, Jesus is the light of the world.  This is not an insignificant statement, but very profound and very important.  Let’s start from the beginning. Many Prophets have testified of the fact that Jesus Christ is the light of the world long before the Savior was even born.  The very first sign of his bir...

Because God Love's Us

How is Christ’s Birth Significant to me Talk on 12/20/2020 Good Morning Brothers and Sisters & Merry Christmas!   Heavenly Father must know my preferred method for giving a talk is procrastinating because I have been called to fill in last minute on many occasions.   However, this is the first time it’s happened on Christmas Sunday.   But I am happy to be here with you and I’m so grateful for technology that allows us to meet and worship together, especially during this Christmas season.   I’m not gonna lie, this is weird speaking on zoom.   I much prefer being together and making eye contact with you and seeing your encouraging smiles.   So please bear with any awkwardness I may have.   When initially asked to speak, Brother Smith gave me the topic of “How Christ’s birth is significant to me.”   My initial response was, could that topic be any broader?   But then gratefully he followed it up with “Particularly from the prosp...

Kid's Talks

Riley’s Primary Talk on Baptism 3/15/20 Today I want to talk on Baptism.   Being baptized is a commandment from Heavenly Father.   We have to be baptized to make it back to Him.   Even Jesus Christ was baptized.   If Jesus Christ was baptized we should be baptized too.   When we turn 8 years old we can choose to follow Jesus Christ’s example and be baptized too.   When we are baptized and confirmed we become members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.     If you have already been baptized, you should remember the covenants, or promises you made.   If you have not been baptized, you should study and pray and keep the commandments so that when you turn 8 years old you will be ready. We should all remember how important baptism is.   I am really excited I get to be baptized next year.   In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen Faith Parker’s Talk   2/16/20   Today, my talk is going to be about f...
