When did you start solid food?

So I was going to start the P-Man on Rice Cereal today. Of all the recommended readiness signs he has the majority. But as I did more research this morning I found a lot of things that said wait until they are at least 4 months. So I'm curious to you experienced Mom's out there, When did you start your babies on cereal/food other then breastmilk?

I'll take all the advice you give, THANKS!

Parker's Stat's:
  • Over 13 lbs
  • Can sit with support
  • Can hold head up(since 1 month)
  • Eats like a monster, I have to give him way more then the recommended amount for his age (which is what mostly tells me he needs something more)
Let me know what you think!

I'd say wait until the recommended four months. Mostly, it's for food allergies that they recommend you to wait. If you start too early, they have a higher chance of developing allergies.

Also, be careful with HOW much when you do start. Rice cereal can constipate them like NO other. Just a warning. Baby oatmeal cereal has more fiber in it, but I can't remember if that's recommended to introduce first. Ask your pediatrician, I'd say.

I would wait until at least 4 months. Babies don't need solids until 4 months, and actually most don't need them until 6 months even. Right now, my understanding is to hold off as long as possible. Partially for your own good... Feeding babies solids gets to be a messy pain pretty quickly over the fun, cute side of things.
How is the bay area treating you guys?

I started Rachael close to 3 months, which was way too early. I will be waiting until close to 6 months with this next baby. It is so fun to watch them grow and do all these new things, but solids isn't something to rush. Babies definitely do not need solids before 6 months, it's more for practice then calories.

We waited until four months with Thad. He was probably ready before that and we started really slow but I just didn't really see any reason to rush things. My sis-in-law started WAY younger with her son, though, like putting rice cereal in his bottles and I don't think he had any problems... maybe some constipation. Just depends.

I'd say I have to agree with Rachel whole heartedly, don't start until 4 months because of food allegies, but if you feel like he is ready, just talk to your pediatrician, he'll know what's best. :)

Most concerns have been addressed.... such as allergies and constipation.

Most pediatricians recommend starting at 6 months and some even later. WIC in Idaho will allow me to start at 4 months.

Knowing this, I started Kiegan on plain ol' rice cereal at 3 1/2 months. HE LOVED IT! He was a growing and I didn't feel I could keep up with him .... he was always nursing. Like most moms have mentioned, start out slow. Recommendations for other solid foods vary. If you go to WIC, be sure to check out their classes for feeding infants. OR talk with your pediatrician.

One suggestion- when you start feeing the little fella the goodies, start with veggies. Stick with veggies till he has mastered them all .... then move onto fruits. Did this with both my kiddos and I DO NOT have picky eaters. They'll eat whatever I give them. I LOVE IT! It's so much better than have a sweet tooth child who only wants junk as they get older so they can have the sugar rush.

Kamryn started right at 4 months. It is because of allergy-risks that they say to wait till then. Kamryn was way ready around then too. When will Parker be 4 months?

I waited until mine were 4 months. And even then it took Eli quite awhile before he actually figured out what to do.

Wait until 6 mo. They don't need anything other than breast milk for the first 6mo of age. Also there diapers get really stinky when you start adding food. that alone helps me to wait longer.

Everyone else has said mostly what I was going to. Wait until at least 4 months, if not until 6 months or later. I was in a hurry to start Jilly at 4 1/2 months too, even though my mom kept telling me to wait. She did all right with it then and we didn't have any issues with allergies. BUT I will be waiting until later with this baby, probably 6 months or later. And remember, ALL solid food is for experimental reasons only until at least 12 months. Breastmilk is ALL that babies need until they are at least a year old. So don't feel like you have to start solids anytime soon. When you say that he eats more than recommended for his age, what do you mean by that? Does he nurse more often, or do you pump and give him a bottle? All babies are different and you should nurse more often if that's what he seems to need. If it's just that he needs to suck more, you can offer a pacifier in that instance. If you have more questions, I can point you to some resources. I have learned SO MUCH since Jilly's pregnancy, birth and infancy. Good luck!

We learned from our first, and with our second child we started him on red meat at 3 months. Not too much- 6 oz. filets, a couple slices of tri-tip. After all, you don't want to over-do it. And wash it down with some potatoes and gravy.

The Light of the World

I was asked to give a talk yesterday in church.  Kinda daunting knowing it was Christmas Sunday, but I think it went pretty well.  I like remembering my talk so I'm throwing it up here mainly for my own record.  But maybe it will bless the lives of others too.  I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and that the Light of Christ will be upon you and radiate from you now and forever. Jesus Christ: The Light of the World Rebecca’s talk given on 12/20/2015 Jesus Christ.  Can a topic be any broader? I have spent a lot of time over the last 6 weeks trying to decide what direction I wanted to go and I kept going back to the same thought, Jesus is the light of the world.  This is not an insignificant statement, but very profound and very important.  Let’s start from the beginning. Many Prophets have testified of the fact that Jesus Christ is the light of the world long before the Savior was even born.  The very first sign of his bir...

Because God Love's Us

How is Christ’s Birth Significant to me Talk on 12/20/2020 Good Morning Brothers and Sisters & Merry Christmas!   Heavenly Father must know my preferred method for giving a talk is procrastinating because I have been called to fill in last minute on many occasions.   However, this is the first time it’s happened on Christmas Sunday.   But I am happy to be here with you and I’m so grateful for technology that allows us to meet and worship together, especially during this Christmas season.   I’m not gonna lie, this is weird speaking on zoom.   I much prefer being together and making eye contact with you and seeing your encouraging smiles.   So please bear with any awkwardness I may have.   When initially asked to speak, Brother Smith gave me the topic of “How Christ’s birth is significant to me.”   My initial response was, could that topic be any broader?   But then gratefully he followed it up with “Particularly from the prosp...

Kid's Talks

Riley’s Primary Talk on Baptism 3/15/20 Today I want to talk on Baptism.   Being baptized is a commandment from Heavenly Father.   We have to be baptized to make it back to Him.   Even Jesus Christ was baptized.   If Jesus Christ was baptized we should be baptized too.   When we turn 8 years old we can choose to follow Jesus Christ’s example and be baptized too.   When we are baptized and confirmed we become members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.     If you have already been baptized, you should remember the covenants, or promises you made.   If you have not been baptized, you should study and pray and keep the commandments so that when you turn 8 years old you will be ready. We should all remember how important baptism is.   I am really excited I get to be baptized next year.   In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen Faith Parker’s Talk   2/16/20   Today, my talk is going to be about f...
